Beginning the counseling process takes courage and is often anxiety provoking. You may start counseling for a variety of reasons; to examine an emotional or behavioral issue like anxiety, depression, substance abuse; discuss an upsetting or confusing life transition like the loss of a loved one, divorce or professional change and sometimes to get a different perspective and untangle residual patterns that may be holding you back.
Therapy can be an effective way to address the stresses and concerns of daily life. I believe that through learning more about yourself, examining your present circumstances, how past experiences and personal history have brought you to where you are now and by practicing how to best gain acceptance and use the strengths that you possess change can occur. I recognize and appreciate that entering therapy is one of the more challenging and rewarding decisions a person can make.
I specialize in working with adults, young adults, adolescents and pre-teens in the treatment of depression, PTSD, anxiety, relationship issues, grief and creative blockage. I utilize techniques from a variety of therapeutic modalities, rooted in a holistic and psychodynamic philosophy and believe in treating the whole person.
I am intensively trained in Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT) which combines standard cognitive-behavioral techniques for emotion regulation and reality-testing with concepts of distress tolerance, acceptance, and mindful awareness largely derived from Eastern meditative practice.
I am currently a Candidate for Certification as a Daring WayTM Facilitator. The Daring WayTM is a highly experiential methodology based on the research of Dr. Brené Brown. The method was designed for work with individuals, couples,
families, work teams, and organizational leaders. It can be facilitated in clinical,
educational, and professional settings. During the process we explore topics such as vulnerability, courage, shame, and worthiness. We examine the thoughts,
emotions, and behaviors that are holding us back and we identify the new choices
and practices that will move us toward more authentic and wholehearted living. The
primary focus is on developing shame resilience skills and developing daily practices
that transform the way we live, love, parent, and lead.
I am currently offering individual counseling and group counseling with specialized focused on DBT skills & The Daring WayTM. Please see the group page or contact me for more information.
I look forward to meeting you! ~Mikal
